You probably need to setup the connection as "Autoconnect". Click to the networkmanager icon in systray > Edit Connections > select your wireless connection > click Edit Connection > Next > Next > check Autoconnect box > Save

I do not have exactly the same problem but for some reason, although I believe that my network adaptor is working, Network Manager seems unable to find any networks. I was connected to the internet without any problem this morning but when I rebooted my system this problem has emerged. Has anybody experienced the same problem? Should I reinstall Network Manager?

@system5
You could try to connect using "nmtui" tool - a simple NetworkManager text user interface. Just run it in terminal:
$ nmtui
try to make a connection and report back.

I used the "nmtui" tool and could see all available networks including my own. I activated my connection successfully and was using Network Manager to make sure that it was set to auto connect when the connection disconnected. I tried the "nmtui" tool again but have not been able to activate the connection for a second time as Network Manager returns the message "ssid not found". It seem that the problem is with Network Manager but I would welcome your further advice.

It could be a problem with your firmware, what device are you using?
I have had to install firmware from github for a RTL8192cu which had the same issue (connection drops after a short while)

I am using a TP-Link Dual Band Wireless Adaptor and the good news is that after reactivating the connection with the "nmtui" tool it appears that I just needed to reboot my system. When I loaded up my system again the following morning everything was back to normal and the connection has remained stable. Thank you both for your advice.

You are welcome, and I'm glad to hear it is working properly now
