How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

I have an 'installation USB stick' with Q4OS and running "Install Q4OS" from there to a HD (as a multiple boot system - with Windows7 - Mint 17.2 and Q4OS).
I reduced the Mint partition of about 160 Gb to half size, getting about 80 Gb "unallocated" space.

Then I wanted to create a partition there for Q4OS - but then a warning comes - that the whole disc (or most of it) would be erased !

How to create that partition for Q4OS?

Thanks for any answer.

Thanks!
I installed as far as the point where it says double click on the Windows partition.
Then there should come a small window with Mount point - but it doesn't.
Instead a window comes with a warning (there is also a yellow warning sign). It says something like: unable to read the contents of this. ... Missing software package ... ntfs-3g/ntfsprogs
I suppose I should also mark the Mint partition the same way - there also no "Mount..." box comes. Only a box with information: "Not mounted" and a lot of other details. (I tried to find a screen shot utility to capture it, but couldn't find it).
Now I dared not go on - so quitted the installation - the partitions were changed however.
How to proceed?
Thanks.
PS: There also comes some windows with TDE Demon: a new medium is detected. What do you want to do?
1 Open in a new window
2 Do nothing
(Cancel) - I just hit cancel
(3 windows with this)

Re: How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

During installation there is no need to mount these partitions, is there a reason you are trying to do this? In your previous post you said you have already re-sized your partitions to leave 80Gb free, this is the only area you should be interested in as you just need to create your Q4OS installation partition.

As for the pesky boxes that pop up, I usually just click cancel on them and continue with the installation, I find them pretty annoying and once you have installed you can prevent them from popping up when you modify your partitions in the future.

TIP: To take a screenshot from Q4OS simply press PrtScr and then right click the desktop and select Save Clipboard Contents and type a filename in the box that appears and you have the saved image on your desktop. This works for the Live-Cd and also any Q4OS installation.

The reason is you write in your tutorial that a box should come with options to fill in:
Mount should be blank
Format as blank

but I don't get that box.
You write that you should do that for the Windows partition to prevent Q4OS to install there (as I have understood it).
Then double click on swap etc. should give a box which it doesn't (for me).
I'll make some screenshots now.

Re: How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

I think you are trying to do the instructions in the next step before closing GParted, please re-read the instructions as I cannot see any errors. When using GParted to add the Q4OS partition you only need to create it and apply the changes and when that has finished you close GParted and continue to the next step.

Yes - you are right! Sorry.
I got Scorpion installed and the Desktop Environment and programs.
Nice.
I have one question: how do I change the default option to line 4 in the grub menu? I have done it before but have forgotten how to do it.
Thanks.

Re: How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

I usually leave each grub configured as they are and use the UEFI boot menu to select which OS I want to boot, that way I can add/remove distributions without affecting the others, If you want to change the boot order of the UEFI menu that can be done usin the instructions I posted in your other topic, just go down to where I change the boot order to see how. smile

Re: How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

Ran into a problem:

Opened two terminals (a 'superuser' and an 'ordinary' terminal) and ran them side by side (sorry, that may be a cardinal sin(?) - but I wanted to see if they reacted similarly)

But couldn't get to the efibootmgr and see the boot order:

Re: How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

I am guessing you may have installed using the "legacy" bios boot system (referred to as CSM) and this might explain the results you are seeing, Did you install Mint as a legacy boot OS?
could you post the output of

sudo parted --list

I have no idea. - I only know I have previously installed Mint. ;-)
But I'm sure you can see it here:

Oh yes - when I installed Mint - it made a boot menu - and this has been replaced now with the Q4OS menu - does this make sense?

I remember I got the commands to change the default menu option in Mint and changed the default no. and waiting time,... But it seems different in Q4OS...

Re: How to make a partition on HD for Q4OS? [Solved]

Ok, you are using the legacy boot option so the first question you need to answer is which system do you want to have control over grub?

If you want Mint to control it you will need to boot into Mint and re-install grub

sudo grub-install /dev/sda

and then

sudo update-grub

this will bring all OS's into your grub menu putting Mint first and the order of the other systems could be configured after

If you want Q4OS to control grub just update grub and then you can configure boot order.

Configuring the boot order has always been a bit hit and miss with me when multi-booting and the easiest way I have found in the past was to use a package called grub-customizer, the Q4OS devs have made an experimental installer for it which is available in the Q4OS experimental repo athough I haven't used it since getting my UEFI system so you might need to report (in a separate post) if it fails in some way and I'm sure they will look into it when they get a spare minute or two. smile

You could also install grub-customizer to your Mint installation by adding a PPA (info available here depending on how you want to control your system.

Just a short note, grub-customizer is capable of much more than just changing the boot order but I have used it mainly for that purpose and cannot verify the other options work correctly.

You need to edit '/etc/default/grub' file, the 'GRUB_DEFAULT' option determines the default boot menu entry. Afterwards update grub in terminal:
$ sudo update-grub

$ sudo update-grub

This was quite easy - used the 'super user terminal' (in Q4OS) and Nano to edit the file's GRUB_DEFAULT to 3 (=line 4 in the menu, as option 0 = line 1 in the menu) and the waiting time to 3, and then updated grub as you wrote. Then it worked!
Thanks!
