Do I just put the original 'install' USB in and run - then it gives me the option of creating a partition automatically, I suppose?

Not quite automatically but you will be able to resize/create partitions on your HDD during the installation process

By the way, is there a way in this forum where you tag a reply as "Solution" and "Thanks"?

You can go to the Original Post and edit the title and add [solved] to the beginning

You are very welcome, I'm glad we managed to resolve it (eventually )

PS. I suppose the Nvidia graphics card is defect and not usable?

I would guess this card may have been the cause of the original problem, but you could try it in another machine to test it out.
