New Q4OS User - Items

1.  Welcome screen:  If I uncheck the check box for the Welcome screen for "show dialog at statup", can I search for the Welcome screen application to bring it up?  The reason I ask is, I like the shorcuts that are provided.  Maybe you could develop a control center application that would include these items along with other items for control the system.  Kinda of like the Control Panel on steroids.

2.  I usually find myself liking distros that utilize the xfce desktop environment.  I saw Q4OS on Distrowatch and was unfamiliar with the Trininty desktop.  Honestly, I like your implementation of it, but then again I don't know of another distro that focuses on it.  It reminds me a lot of old school Windows.  Surprising, I like it.  I think Q4OS will make it easier for Windows users to transition to Linux.

3.  My one criticism was the setup of the HP Device Manager.  I found the documentation on your site about doing the setup.  Although it was easy, I think you should try to focus on making this application already avaiable for use with no commands to run in order to setup.

Overall, I haven't found any issues with this distro.  I am using it on VirtualBox.  Great job!

You can strt the Welcome Screen by right clicking the desktop and select Run Command and then start typing welcome until welcome-screen.exu appears and select that and Click run. This will bring the window back up and you will note the Show this dialog on startup is again checked and will be revealed upon next reboot (unless you un-check it).

Re: New Q4OS User - Items

Its a shame that there couldnt be a non-CLI action to access the welcome screen.  Many distros maintain access within the menu so you can do a single click to gain access to the welcome screen.

Re: New Q4OS User - Items

You can edit /usr/share/applications/q4os-welcome-screen.desktop (as root or with sudo) and remove the line that says NoDisplay=true or you could just comment it out (put a # at the beginning of the line) which would do the same, then you would have a menu entry at Start -> Program -> Accessories -> System -> Q4OS Welcome Screen.

Re: New Q4OS User - Items

Yes you can do that but by default it should be there and be a one click GUI option, so most users dont have to deal with the CLI.

Im not anti-CLI but Q4OS will not gain wider acceptance unless some features are easier to access.  Thats already happening with other distros and to great affect if I may say, and those distros are Debian based not associated with Ubuntu.

Re: New Q4OS User - Items

Dai_trying, since I am new to Q4OS, how to I edit the q4os-welcome-screen.desktop file with KWrite?  I am new to KWrite and I assume that I would need to edit and update the file as sudo, correct?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Re: New Q4OS User - Items

I do agree that the welcome screen should be easier available through the menu system and have said so in a previous post, but as it stands it is only a simple modification to allow it.

Right click the desktop and select run command then type tdesu kwrite /usr/share/applications/q4os-welcome-screen.desktop in the dialog box. A kwrite window will open up with the file loaded and you can modify it, when you have finished save the file and exit. You will need to log-out/in for the effect to take place and then the welcome screen will be available in the menu.

Dai_trying, that worked.  Thank you for teaching me about the tdesu command.  I will need to keep this one in my notes.

Re: New Q4OS User - Items

Just place a link say within TDE components so it can be accessed.  Making the change in 3.1 would be a great move.
