*SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

Ok, I still have no sound on this laptop. This is set up with dual boot with Windows 8.1 and sound works on Windows. However, a live Ubuntu cd also has no sound. I am trying to get fldigi and Audacity to working but have no sound out and no mic in.
Any suggestions?

inixi -F, lsusb, and lspci attached

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

Is Pulseaudio installed?  Did you check  to make sure the sound isnt muted?

Ive never had any issues with Dell Inspiron 15 in regards to sound with any Linux distro recently.  Mind you Ive used Linux Mint 18,MXLinux 17 and Q4OS with this laptop.

I have an Inspiron 15 3552 but it appears to be considerably different to yours so I cannot offer any advice, my sound is working fine though, I will post my inxi -F output just for reference.

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

It  could be the Radeon integrated sound is clashing with the Intel sound but I wasnt able to see your info very well as it didnt cooperate with my text viewer

You could check your bios to see whats enabled but Intel HD sound is the default to my knowledge. Pulseaudio should show that the Intel sound is set as the default.

I think it mentioned the Azalia controller for the Radeon and the Intel HD sound.

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

CC - sound is enabled as is microphone. However in fldigi the mic selection is blank.

Dia - difference in audio area
mine-
Audio:     Card-1 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-2 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Kabini HDMI/DP Audio
           driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.9.0-5-amd64

shows 2 sound cards! Could that be causing a confusion? Works with windows 8.1
And, like I said - the Ubuntu live cd also has no sound, so must be something with Debian.

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

I had to install pavucontrol for an issue with bluetooth, but the problem was switching devices, it might be that it will allow you to easier control which device you want to use for sound (both input and output)

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

Good suggestion installing pavucontrol, sorry I misunderstood JimW but still the same answer, pulseaudio with pavucontrol.

As I mentioned above there could be a conflict between the Azalea sound controller and the Intel HD sound.

Make sure Pulseaudio is using the Intel sound.

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

Ok, I'm going to called this mostly solved.
By going into kmix and changing to "HD-Audio Generic" I got the speakers working. I had an external microphone plugged in and by switching between the various inputs (headphone mic. headset mic, etc....) I finally got it working (into Audacity record). When I unplugged the mic it switched to the internal mic. However....when I plugged the external mic back in it refused to recognise it or let me switch back to it. I may have to reboot. But, due to headache and backache (pulled a mussel the other day) I don't think I'll work on it more today.
Thanks for the help and suggestions guys!

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

If you install pavucontrol{pulseaudio control} you may be able to solve it entirely.  Kmix should have showed it as HD-Intel but as long as it works.

Re: *SOLVED* Sound problems on Dell Inspiron 15

I have pavucontrol installed. It gave me even less options than kmix! I have been trying for over a week with pavucontrol and finally gave up today and tried kmix again.
