Heres an update,  www.eweek.com/security/kpti-intel-chip-flaw-exposes-security-risks

Add the Intel ME issues that had to be fixed thru bios updates, its not been a good situation.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

Yeah, the AMD Ryzen team must be celebrating this discovery since that's not affected by this bug.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

Unforunately AMD isnt off the hook as Meltdown affects everything except AMD but another issue Spectre affects all cpus including AMD. This is what Intel was referring to with their comments.  More here,  www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/01/04/intel-amd-cpu-meltdown/

www.techspot.com/news/72576-massive-cpu-flaws-get-name-meltdown-spectre-what.html

Meltdown and Spectre  between them affect all modern cpus.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

Patches are available for Meltdown  but I posted a thread in feature request to see if the devs will be making those patches available.

Windows 10 patch is out but the Win7/8 patches wont be out till next tuesday.

The patches may cause performance issues depending on how you use your system and ive seen quotes of 19-23% on average.

Spectre patches Im not sure.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

Yes, spectre affects AMD, but the meltdown patches are the ones that are going to give a permformance hit, not spectre from what I've read.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

Spectre patches its a bit of an unknown at this point and Im not defending Intel but flaws/errata have always existed in various hardware and my main concern is getting people protected.  Given the abilities of present systems and the fact that the speed penalties will vary with the app I doubt its going to turn into a major issue performance wise.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

I don't know, some of the initial tests are showing double digit performance hits from these patches when benched on real hardware.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

As I said above the average was 19-23% but further tests showed that varied considerably. No doubt meltdown causes issues but if youre already using a very good system and you end up with a 20% hit is it going to be a huge issue?    Its so dependent on the app as to wehter youll see major or minor performance hits.  This type of thing has been around for years both with errata and individual issues with specific architectures.

By the time this is patched and ok, the hardware will be even faster and down the road those losses will be recovered.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

Gees, here comes the class action suits(reported by a number of tech sites) against Intel and probably against others as this continues to play out.

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502   If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.

Re: Intel cpu design flaw forces Linux/Windows redesign

It was a good processor but this problem affects a nuge number of older and newer processors.
