Unpleasant popping/crackling sound on boot with Q4OS Scorpion

What is interesting, the popping/crackling sound is emitted a few seconds before the Trinity start-up sound.

Things I have already tried to fix this:

In "/etc/pulse/default.pa" commenting out "load-module module-suspend-on-idle"

In "/etc/pulse/client.conf" commenting out "autospawn = yes" and "daemon-binary = /usr/bin/pulseaudio" as well as changing "autospawn = yes" to "autospawn = no"

In "/etc/pulse/default.pa" adding "load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0"

I'm using a built-in HDA NVidia (Azalia ALC86-DTS) sound card. I have not observed any other sound problems. The issue does not occur on Q4OS Orion.

Any ideas?

Re: Unpleasant popping/crackling sound on boot with Q4OS Scorpion

Azalia ALC86-DTS is a Realtek chipset based product so it could be a driver issue.  You didnt mention what system model youre using but could there be a competing sound device on the same system?  Many gpus have their own sound that can interact with an onboard independent sound chip.  Intel vs Realtek for instance.

Not sure how old your system is but the fact that it doesnt happen with Orion could be that it needs an older driver/kernel 3.16 that may not be available or compatible with the newer 4.9 kernel with Scorpion 2.4

The Azalia ALC86-DTS I believe has been around since 2005?

The system is ASUS Pundit P1-AH2. On Orion I had graphic issues, so I think that Scorpion works generally better here...

Re: Unpleasant popping/crackling sound on boot with Q4OS Scorpion

Your system uses the Nvidia 6150 for graphics and is an Nforce 430 chipset{released 2005?) so given the age of the system, Orion with its older kernel should work best both for graphics and sound. Sound is the more difficult driver situation here so using the older kernel would be best. Graphics, you should be fine with either the Nouveau drivers or the Proprietary Nvidia 304 driver but you have multiple choices where I think the 304 driver would be the better choice.

I dont have a lot of experience with your system with Linux but Ive worked with it a lot in Windows and similar sound issues cropped up, which were fixed with newer chipset drivers or sound drivers. Asus also released a newer bios which seemed to have solved some issues not directly related to the sound and graphics issues found with this chipset(acpi for instance).

Yes, it happens, Q4OS and other linux distro emit a disgusting beep before the select OS screen appears when dual booting.
That's so weird.

If its a hardware issue it wont matter what distro youre using and agree it happens with many distros and in Windows.

The 'beep' is one of those annoying things but is easily fixed.

In /etc/modprobe.d you need to create a blacklist file to prevent the pcspkr module from loading

As root/sudo open a text editor - kwrite will do.
In there put the line:-
blacklist pcspkr

Save the file as nobeep.conf.

I've attached that file so if easier just copy this as root/sudo to /etc/modeprobe.d/ and reboot.

Interesting as it doesnt happen with Orion, is this a general fix bin?  What about the crackling issues some users get, not the beep?

Re: Unpleasant popping/crackling sound on boot with Q4OS Scorpion

Hi CC

I've been using it to fix beeps on various machines since forever - it's the old 'system bell' smile

What I find curious is that sometimes a machine will be a beeper, sometimes not. It's down to the pcspkr module as you'll have guessed and it may just be dependent on how the kernel was built or maybe just the wind direction....

Scorpion id the first distro I've seen with an empty /etc/modprobe.d which I find puzzling, but I've only just recently been able to run anything later than Jessie /Buntu 14.04 so things may have changed.

Re: Unpleasant popping/crackling sound on boot with Q4OS Scorpion

Ive never experienced the beep, but have had the crackling sounds with various hardware, my Nvidia card did it till I shut off the built in sound chip. My old Santa Cruz sound card loved to crackle. Thanks for the info!
