Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

To be honest I prefer xarchiver - it is more like winzip as it used to be.
Once installed just right click on the file>open with>xarchiver

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I prefer ark, partly due to it being small and it has so far done everything I have needed. On Debian with Xfce I use xarchiver and it too has worked very well for me.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I used to use WinZip, and really liked it. I will check out xarchiver. Can I find it in synaptic...?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I saved the VueScan files from my computer that crashed to a thumb drive; I did as you suggested, and downloaded xarchiver and extracted the files to open.
When i click on the any of the 4 individual files, nothing happens. what am I doing wrong...? Is there a specific program I shuold use to open these..?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Right click the file called vuescan
Go down to Properties
Click the Permissions tab
Check the box Is Executable
OK
Double click vuescan - all should be well.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I installed KDE Plasma Desktop to try it. I had it on my last computer, but it didn't work right(too slow, not functional) Tried it on this computer,...same thing. Ended up removing it. Has anyone had the same problem...?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Given the age of that machine, KDE plasma & Gnome 3 are going to be rather slow.  That's a REALLY old processor for how heavy plasma 5 is (and Gnome 3 even heavier).  I have a modern quad-core Celeron on one of my laptops and I'll admit it's barely adequate for plasma.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

TDE,LXDE,XFCE,Mate,LXQT,Budgie would be ok but agree with tlmiller, Gnome 3 and KDE are a no go with that system.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I'll just stick with TDE, it suits me fine. I might try the ones you mentioned, CC,just to see how they look. What's your favorite...?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

My favorite is XFCE because it offers the best blend of features, speed and low resource usage. Its very configurable and easy to work with.  I also run TDE, KDE,LXDE, and Mate.

I think with your hardware Capt TDE would be the best choice with LXDE the next best choice.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

IMO LXQT > LXDE at this point in their development.  It's not perfect, but I think it's surpassed LXDE now in terms of general usage.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

CC,
I think you're right. At this point, everything is running perfect. I don't want to mess anything up...sometimes it's best just to leave well enough alone....  :-)  And, BTW, Happy Holidays to everyone on here...!

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Happy Holidays to you as well !

The issue with LXQT is its, a bit heavier resource wise versus LXDE.  With 32bit installs LXDE will be around 130-150mbs at main screen versus 175-200 for LXQT.  Surprisingly XFCE 32bit is pretty low around 150-180 of course depending on the distro your using with it.
