New old toy - HP Pavilion

Yesterday - out of the blue - I was gifted a very nice US Keyboarded HP Laptop - It's a Pavilion Entertainment PC dv6 1326 from around 2009.

Talk about connectivity - it's even got an e-SATA port!!!

Swapped out old spinner for SSD and here we go.
Apart from needing a new battery it is great - finally I can run Scorpion and that's what I'm doing.
May try to source a UK keyboard as that small return key always drove me nuts at work when any of our overseas teams came over and needed stuff doing....

So far everything just works - I've always had miniscule ATI graphics chips, so I'm guessing the stock Intel driver is correct for this setup - but any advice on that very welcome.

Audio seems to work but my guess is I'm not getting the full SRS Premium Sound experience based on what came out when I span up the Windows drive to update the BIOS.

What I find great (having switched off Fan All The Time in the BIOS) is that temp management is just brilliant. After 2 hours use the fan has only buzzed up once - just sitting at around 45C - oh the quiet!!!!

Re: New old toy - HP Pavilion

Your running PulseAudio with this install?  Stock Intel stock GPU driver is fine for this notebook. I was surprised by the specs you gave, as this model typically has a ATI HD 4530 IGP as all the other specs like the core 2 duo 2.2ghz cpu all check out. This series in general runs varying ATI HD graphics chipsets, curious?

Fan all the time is great if you game or use intensive apps where more cooling is needed to prevent issues. Otherwise thermal management is very good with this notebook.

The laptop speakers are pretty good{Altec Lansing} but get some good external speakers and see the difference.

Glad you got such a nice laptop which definitely should run Scorpion great.

When I switched to my Optiplex 7010 systems I was a bit floored with the overall performance versus my older systems I use to run.

It looks like there was some variation in chipsets - some of the higher spec models had switching Intel/Nvidia graphics of a type which we've seen discussed recently. It looks like that's all software controlled though.

I'll try it with Pulse instead of Alsa.

Re: New old toy - HP Pavilion

Thanks for the heads up and yes the higher spec and more recent laptops did use Intel/Nvidia combinations but youve got a good one in terms of reliability and compatibility.  Ive worked for HP suppport and have worked with some of their laptops over the years, but it was a time when OEMs used a variety of chipsets and integrated devices.

Yes the Nvidia/Intel IGPs were software controlled and many distros now like Mint, have the Nvidia/Optima drivers included for use.

PulseAudio should solve the issue as Ive had this happen before with a 1326 laptop.
