HP Pavilion a1710n

I just got a HP Pavilion a1710n given to me. I had Windblows  Vista on it originally..UGh..! Anyway, I loaded an older version of Q4OS Orion (1.4.6) on it. Install went fine...however, when I tried to run the desktop profiler, it would stop and I'd get an error code 60. When I tried to install synaptic installer,it quit also. This machine only has 1 gig of ram installed. I can install as much as 4 gig. Is this because of the older version of Orion..? I intend to put Scorpion 2.4 on it. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Can't speak to the failure of things, but wouldn't be surprised that it's due to an older version (what version of Debian is 1.4.6 tied to?).  I'd at least get it up to 2 GB ram before putting Scropion on it.  While it'll run with 1 G, you'll definitely see the difference in how well it'll be able to multi-task with 2 compared to 1.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I haven't had any HP laptops so cant offer any advice there, but I usually try to load the latest versions first and then step back if it doesn't work, that way I usually have the most up to date OS the machine can handle. smile

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Its not a laptop as the Pavilion line is desktops but it has a Athlon 64 X2 dual core and geforce 6150LE gpu so it should be fine with Orion.

The error code 60 is a general code error usually folowed by an error code or message, but given the issues it leads me to believe there is an issue with the ram. Have you tested it or have you tried a different stick of ram to test?

The 4 gig limitation may be a built in limitation you see with some oem systems.

Did Vista run ok before you tried to install Q4OS?

Try the Orion 1.8.8 live cd and see what happens.

I had two laptops that ran the Athlon 64 X2 from Dell and both had no issues with Orion.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

To all here,
I decided to try it with Vista on it. It would run,but it would lock up... had to pull the plug to shut it off. Don't have the RAM  I need for it. I'll have to order it. I would like to move to Scorpion,so I'll wait till I max out the RAM to 4 gig. I found it cheap enough. This has 2 sticks of 512 in it's first 2 slots..not impressed. I thought as much as what all of you suggested. I'll let you know my results. Thanks for all your input...!

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

1gb isnt enough for Vista but Q4OS 1.8.8 should be fine. Did you try running a live session with 1.8.8 to see if the system is ok?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I tried to burn a Live ISO of 1.8.8 on my other computer, but I'm having problems with that. Ever since I reinstalled K3b in the trinity version,it doesn't want to burn ISO's...I've been busy with work,so I haven't had time to fix that problem. My friend who fixes computers, told me he would burn me both,Scorpion and Orion 1.8.8 so I have them for my library. Vista is gone, since the machine had corrupt files, and was used to keep documents of a business on it. The original owner wanted all the info deleted. By installing Q4OS on it,that solved that issue. I feel it's a hardware issue now. Once I install 4 gig of RAM,and get the newest version of both Scorpion and Orion, it should work fine. CC,in your opinion, should I stick with Orion,or move to Scorpion...? BTW....when I was in Vista, the system profile said this was a 32 bit machine....not a 64..how is that possible...? Is that because of the RAM....?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I'm not familiar with that hardware to know if it might have issues with Scorpion, so I'll laeave that to someone else.

As far as Vista being 32-bit, that's just because many of the first generation of 64-bit capable chips still would ship with 32-bit software due to there is no reason to use 64-bit if it's 2 GB of ram or less (and in fact 32-bit is slightly more efficient with memory 2 GB and under, so 64-bit was slower on the same hardware).  Over 2 GB the 64-bit registers do provide an advantage, and over 4 GB it provides a huge benefit since 32-bit can access that without running PAE.  So as installed, it WAS a 32-bit system, even if it was 64-bit capable.

TL,
Thanks for clarifying that for me. I will do the 4 gig upgrade. I will await other input on here, about which (Scorpion or Orion) to install.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Being a dual core 2.2Ghz machine I would definitely try Scorpion, and would only "downgrade" to Orion if it ran into issues.
But I always try to run Scorpion first (or the current Stable) on any machine as (IMO) it generally will give the best long term support and functionality.
Also I think the developers ( in general not Q4OS) will work more on the stable and testing versions of their software as opposed to "old-stable" which to my thinking would be considered a lower priority but at the same time it has had more testing and tweaks in its lifetime so could possibly be considered to be more stable already.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

The system was released in 2006 even though its a 64bit Athlon 64 X2 based system.  I never was able to run Scorpion on my similar systems and honestly I think Orion would be the better choice.  Thats why trying the live cds of both versions may give you a better indication if which will work best. Youre talking an almost 12 year old system and older kernels tend to work a lot better with fewer issues.

My Dell D430s that are slightly newer with C2D cpus cant use Scorpion and they released in 2007.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Thanks,CC
I talked to another friend that tried Scorpion on a similar machine from 2007,also. He had problems with it running, so he also went back to Orion. I will wait for more input, but I'm leaning toward Orion 1.8.8 I don't have the time to be testing which will work. I need a sure install for now.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I definitely had Orion at the time 1.8.6 installed with no issues as I had three Athlon 64 X2 systems.  The older 3.16 kernel works great and ive never been able to use a kernel higher than 4.4 with those systems.  Scorpion 4.9 kernel is a no go most of the time with older systems.

It's no flyer, but i got it for nothing and am donating it to a someone who doesn't have a working machine. They have already been round to test it (they haven't used Linux before) and are quite happy with it, so I just have to install it for them and it's another Q4OS system out there. smile

I didn't even try Orion as Scorpion just seemed to work well and I cannot see any reason not to use it. And I'm posting this from Chrome using this machine. So I would definitely recommend trying Scorpion first, obviously if you do run into issues that cannot be easily resolved then use Orion instead.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Ive said before that many older machines will run fine(not the majority in my experience) on Scorpion and in your case Dai the Athlon 64 with Geforce 6100 seems to be fine.
Where the problems crop up are with proprietary systems/oems, issues with bios and motherboard revision.  Two seemingly similar systems one oem and the other built from scratch react entirely differently to an OS.

Ive got a lot of proprietary systems so the experience is a bit mixed but certainly as I said before he can try both live cds and see what happens. Knowing HP from that period of time, I doubt its going to be smooth sailing with a newer kernel.

Given Orion wont be around forever, everyone needs to plan for support with newer OS. Ive gotten rid of a lot of my older systems and upgraded to avoid the constant issues with hugely better performance.

All three of my Dell laptops with Athlon 64 X2 2ghz and my Dell D430s with Core 2 Duo 1.3ghz would not run with Scorpion and the latter is a newer system/chipset.

Best compromise kernel for older systems at least in my testing is the 4.4 if you need or dont want to use the older 3.16 kernel.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Depends on hardware but are they proprietary or put together systems?  My Dell inspiron 570 that uses a triple core AMD loves Scorpion but its the only one so far.  Laptops though are very proprietary so its a mixed bag, as desktops generally should have a better time of it.
CaptNoize friend though with a similar system to his couldnt run Scorpion.

Try both live cds, see what happens.
