Libinput configuration

So, the one thing that I haven't been able to figure out, is how to reconfigure libinput successfully. On my q4os machine, the touchpad mostly "just works". However, it uses edge scrolling instead of 2-finger scrolling. I've tried a few things and only managed to make things worse, so have everything back to the defaults. Anyone know how I disable edge scrolling and enable 2-finger scrolling in libinput? I know the hardware supports it as I had used it in windows before installing q4os.

There are configuration options in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf I won't give specific instructions as I'm sure you can figure it out (the options are pretty obvious from their names).

q4os scorption is using synaptics not libinput? Well, that would be why nothing I've tried worked....

Synaptics works well on my laptops with Q4OS, so far no issues.

OH, that's what I use on most of mine, but most distro's use libinput by default. I've had to install and prioritize synaptics on all my Debian installs because with Stretch it defaults to libinput.

Most of the distros Im using use Synaptics so I tend to look at it as the default.

Nope, scorpion fresh install doesn't use synaptics:

Also the libinput conf file is preferred to the synaptics, so even if it were installed, it wouldn't be used:

You are correct, just checked and Synaptics isnt installed even though, xserver- xorg- input- synaptics, is available in Synaptic. Its libinput it appears.

Whats interesting is in the documents on setting up Q4OS here, http://q4os.org/dqa007.html, slide down to number 8 and it discusses Synaptic client for touchpad.

I only checked my older laptop, let me check my newer laptop to see if its installed, Ill be back.

I'd 99% bet that documentation hasn't been updated for Scorpion. Jessie (and thus Orion) used synaptics by default (although libinput was available), while Stretch (and thus Scropion) defaults to libinput while still having synaptics as a fallback option. In this case, I can live with the side scroll if I can't figure it out, although I would like to fix it without reverting to synaptics.

My Dells, on the other hand, have all had to revert to synaptics because libinput I haven't been able to get 3-finger tap to work (1 and 2 work exactly like it should). But while I can find a TON of documentation for libinput on tapping, beyond enabling or disabling scroll en total, I haven't found much for it.

I was over at the Debian forums and it appears they removed libinput and installed Synaptics and werent having any issues. Cant comment as I have never tried it.

I checked my other laptop and it also is using libinput. I probably didnt notice as i use a mouse most of the time.

I think I found it, I was trying 2-finger for ScrollMethod, but you have to type out the 2...aka, twofinger.

Working now on here, so just need to figure out my Debian machines.

I mostly want to start using libinput so that I can get it working whenever the switch to Wayland happens, I'll be able to still use laptops (I rarely use a mouse with my laptops).

Touchpads let you be more mobile and travel lite but I get frustrated with the imprecise movements and unnatural feel to using my fingers like that.

Mice are comfortable and I prefer them when online browsing and clicking around.

Well, the imprecise movements are one thing that libinput is supposed to help with!! It's much less jumpy and much more controllable and precise, if you can make it work right.

The mouse Im using though is really nice and very precise, as I also use it for gaming so you get spoiled. Even my travel mouse from Logitech is really nice.

Never had any touchpad that worked that well.

Most of my laptops have REALLY nice touchpads. The Dells are a little twitchy with synaptics, but still nice. With libinput they're very stable, but without middle click, IMO useless. So I'm forced to use the twitchy but fully functional synaptics. My chromebook has a WONDERFUL touchpad. The Lenovo is a good touchpad, but a bit on the small side.

I stopped carrying a traveling mouse about 10 years ago, unless I'm on an extended trip, where I may end up wanting it just because I can't use a touchpad for hours and hours nonstop.

I dont use laptops a lot so I tend to feel more comfortable with a mouse, plus Ive got some age related issues with my fingers so mice are nice.

Im a desktop user thru and thru and I have a variety of form factors to play with.

Im assuming you use laptops a lot at work as well, so it makes sense for you.

All my work on the side is game testing, OS testing and driver testing, so laptops just wont cut it.

If its not a high end laptop for gaming you end up very limited for gaming. Heat, type of gpu, ram, and hard drive depending on the model are limiting facotrs.

Not to say laptops cant be good gaming machines but you cant change much and cant manage heat that well so, its a tough situation. For older games its a viable alternative for some.

I use to work for Gamespy till they shut down but also did some work for other sites.

Most non-FPS games run ok on decent laptops. I don't do any FPS testing (I hate the genre, I can play ~10 minutes before I literally uninstall the game, ONLY FPS I ever enjoyed was F.E.A.R), so most others work fine. I do most of the testing on the desktop, but it's good to test on the laptop too in order to test how well the performance scales.

I play a lot of FPS and RTS games and both dont run real well on laptops generally. I also multiplayer a lot and desktops just perform better overall.

All my online work is on desktops as a few friends of mine and I have a number of test rigs setup that we wouldnt be able to afford if just one of us had to pay for it.

Some sites will offer some cash/hardware to perk our systems but thats getting rare these days.
