Anyone used Scribus?

Ive certainly read about it but looking to move my wife off of MS Office/Publisher and need an alternative.  She does brochures, advertisements and other PR items and I want something she can get use to pretty quickly.  Shes also used Adobe and it appears Scribus has some similarities to it.

Re: Anyone used Scribus?

Scribus is an acquired taste - it is very much like a combination of Pagemaker 3/4/5 with bits of Quark 4 thrown in.

Big monitor, fast machine, good graphics card will be very handy.

The important difference is that it - like all true DTP - acts much like a pasteboard onto which you assemble stories.

So, editing and writing is done in a text editor then imported into frames, same as pictures. Fonts, leading etc are then applied to that story.

As it draws on a number of industry standards it is not like an MS Office type product, it gives you so much more control over every single part of the production process.

Important question for anyone in DTP is - what is the output requirement?  Provided it is PDF then no problem - whole new learning opportunity there as well!!!

There's a stable and development branch - I'd suggest sticking to stable to get the hang of it. There are also a number of tutorials on U-chube and other locations. I can heartily recommend that these are followed and used to get the hang of it - it is a real shift of mindset and workflow, but will repay hugely with effort. Baby steps - try reproducing a few small jobs first.

BTW - it's a real PITA for complex tables - just thought I'd mention that smile

Re: Anyone used Scribus?

Using the stable branch and and definitely PDF.  My wifes needs are pretty modest running a non-profit. I was more concerned of any major problems we needed to be aware of ahead of time. My wife has extensive experience with Publisher and Adobe so it may ease the learning curve.

Re: Anyone used Scribus?

Well, if by Adobe you mean InDesign then no worries.
Be prepared for 'it's so much easier in Publisher' - at least for a while smile

Re: Anyone used Scribus?

Yes InDesign but my wife has used other software, so hopefully it will work out.
