Login OK then goes to Command Line

I have installed Q4OS using exe in Windows 10. When I reboot it asks for Username and Password. Next it goes to a command line using my Username. I tried startx which then throws up a lot of text but returns to the command line.

What do I need to use in that Command line to get to the Desktop.

I also installed from the LiveCD, but when I reboot get the same Login followed bu that same Command line. Same problem, so how do I get past this onto the Desktop.

The Command line is frank@q4os-desktop:~$ and is preceded by xinit: giving up, xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused, xinit: server error

Thanks

EDIT: I received an answer on the Sourceforge Q4OS forum asking me to come over here. and suggesting the problem may be the graphics driver.
So I looked in Device Manager and the Graphics is Intel G33/G31. Will wait for further information.

Thanks again.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

We could try to assist you to check the system. Please login into the console with your username and password and run the following command in terminal to generate debug file:
$ reportq4
and send it via e-mail support@q4os.org or attach it here to analyze. You can add attachment by 'post reply -> choose file'

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

Ive never been able to get Scorpion 2.4 to run on my systems using the Intel g33/31 BearLake chipset, released in 2007. Orion 1.8.8 does work using the older 3.16 kernel versus Scorpion with the 4.9 kernel. My experience was similar but warnings werent the same. My system just refused to move to the GUI and sat there at the command line asking me to login but refusing to do anything.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

Would it be worth trying to blacklist the intel drivers and force it to use the basic "vesa" driver?  Obviously not an IDEAL solution as no hardware acceleration and limited resolutions, but if it's able to load the drivers, it SHOULD at least load a gui.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

I was able to get it to work with another distro using the 4.4 kernel.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

4OS says it placed the report in /home/frank. I did CD to Home but get /frank as not found. How do I retrieve the file? I also can't figure how I would screen shot it from the command line. Or otherwise save it to somewhere accessible.

Type at the command prompt:
$ cd /home/frank
$ pwd
$ ls
and post output here.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

You could try using the live cd in a live session for Orion 1.8.8 and see what happens.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

This morning I booted from the LiveCD to no avail. It boots to admin@debian:~$ then stops. I tried cd home/frank but it says it doesn't exist.

Unless there is a command to get to the desktop from there, it appears the incompatibility with Intel G33/G31 is insurmountable.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

v18.8 was mentioned, so I tried to find a download of the iso for it or 16.1. Neither seem to be available unless on the Legacy downloads but I haven't located that.

You will find old stable, but supported, Q4OS Orion 1.8.8 at legacy downloads https://www.q4os.org/downloads3.html

Thanks, I wasn't having any luck finding that. Also get "Page not available" on Distrowatch for 16.1.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

Ok, successfully installed v18.8, it is working fine and I am using Chrome in it now. I still have 2.4 on another partition installed through Win10.

18.8 looks fine for now and will work on getting 2.4 to operate using tips from here.

Thanks for now, and I want to get acquainted with 18.8, such as shutting down sleep mode. I have always hated that.

Re: Login OK then goes to Command Line

Orion 1.8.8 always works with the g33/31 chipset in my experience but getting Scorpion to work, more than likely involves using an older kernel, 4.4 or older in my experience.  The issue there is Scorpion benefits from the newer kernel. Ive got similar hardware and the issues dont appear to just lie with the graphics drivers.

Being able to run hardware thats 10 years or older will get harder over time as more distros drop 32bit and kernels continue to progress.
