Re: altdeski broke my q4os

@Cliff_G
Once you get Scorpion installed back onto your machine you could install inxi (sudo apt-get install inxi) and post the output of inxi -F to give a better view of machine setup and status, and it would probably be best to do this before changing too much or trying other possible solutions.

Re: altdeski broke my q4os

Yes, I would imagine he has smile but it would be nice if we could sort out the screen issue even if it causes the system to run slower at least OP would know.

Re: altdeski broke my q4os

Hi guys, thanks,

Yeah, not a big problem what's been happening.  I have a main (Win7) workstation upstairs in my study which is my Real WorkTM machine (Windoze needed for external compatibility), but I wanted to resurrect my old D610 XP machine for downstairs / casual use and also assess the various Linux flavours for long term use, (and also to see if & when I might be able to move the wife's machine to Linux too; M$ and Apple are all waaay too intrusive and over-uppy-datey for our liking - we managed to escape the WinX forced update smile ).

So:

inxi -f      gives

CPU:       Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache: 2048 KB
           speed: 1600 MHz (max)
CPU Flags: acpi apic bts clflush cmov cx8 de dts eagerfpu est fpu
fxsr mca mce mmx msr mtrr nx pae pbe pge pse sep ss sse sse2 tm tm2
           tsc vme

Does that help?

And as I now have the machine back to where I wanted it I want to image the disc - can you point me at a decent backup program?  I just want a one-shot full-disc image, pref GUI not CL, but with single-file restore capability.  Still very unfamiliar with Linux programs. Thx in advance

Re: altdeski broke my q4os

We would really need the output of inxi -F (capital F) this will give a Full overview of system.

Re: altdeski broke my q4os

Screen issues are video bios based so I doubt thats going to get resolved(software fix and forcing it not recommended). The more I see and the various issues occur like the show desktop icon issue it appears this could be a hardware issue. D610 also has issues with acpi which there is no fix for presently.  He could look for a newer bios though as I havent researched it but Im unsure whether necessary fixes are included.

Re: altdeski broke my q4os

Yes, I just looked through the inxi output and I can't see anything "out of place" so would have to guess this will be a limitation of the hardware/software setup. I have in the past gained 1280*1024 on an old pc that didn't want to do it natively by editing the xorg.conf file, this did give me the higher resolution by defining the modes correctly but as has been said earlier it was quite "laggy" and I soon reverted to 1024*768 on that system. Again it was of AMD Athlon 1700+ machine 32 bit and single core and the monitor was capable of the higher resolution (and used it at higher rate on a newer machine without issue) but on that machine wouldn't play nicely...

Yes, we share this opinion, as debug files reported previously show the same result. And yes, there could be still a chance to achieve better resolution by hacking of xorg.conf configuration file, but with possible side effects.

I'm going to move this conversation back to the Intel Video thread...

Re: altdeski broke my q4os

To get a change with the video bios youll need a bios update and i havent seen one so far that solves the issue.
