SiS 771/671 on Dell optiplex FX160 / Q4OS - FIXED

Hi All,

I just got Orion booted on the above hardware. Only sticky point seems to be achieving 1920x1080 resolution.

The chipset is correctly recognised in 'Hardware Devices' but its running at 1280 x 1024.

Any tips on how to get this to match my monitor? [1920x1080]

Thanks!

Re: SiS 771/671 on Dell optiplex FX160 / Q4OS - FIXED

I have a similar question (not trying to hijack thread) after setting correct resolution in above question.

How do you lock the resolution once its changed to the correct resolution.

Each time I reboot my HP Laptop, it reverts back to 1024 x 768 and its distorted.

I find that 1440 x ...   is perfect but, it always reverts to lower resolution.

Thanks,

Bobby

My resolution (1920x1080) is set automatically, but if it wasn't I would start by looking at the results of

xrandr

to see what that says, and if there is a resolution available that you want it could be set in xorg.conf, but settings can be a bit fiddly in my experiance.

One thing you could check, Are you a member of the video group? I have read that it matters in some cases,

groups
dai adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape sudo audio dip video plugdev users netdev lpadmin scanner vboxusers

if not just

 sudo -a -G video <username>

Obviously you put your own user name in place of <username>. It might make a difference.
And if you are having problems getting the ModeLine values for xorg.conf ther is a site that will work them out for you here:- http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

The more I look at this the more I think that the Dell FX160, whilst a nice looking box, is entirely let down by crappy SiS!

Re: SiS 771/671 on Dell optiplex FX160 / Q4OS - FIXED

I would try CC's suggestion and look to see if they have any information available, and check the specs for the video card to make sure it is capable of hd output, I had an old box that was capable of 1280x960 but without my custom xorg.conf would never display that res, so if you are sure your card supports it, get the ModeLine settings from the link i posted earlier and set that into xorg.conf and it should get you where you want top be.

I just checked sis website and they offer (for linux) two drivers, one for the SiS650 & SiS740 and the other for the SiS630 & SiS730 chips, would either of these be any use?

I read somewhere that you can add extra modes using xrand?

Xorg has a driver xserver-xorg-video-sis that should support it if its installed and should be in the repository. If its already installed and causing this issue then youll have to look for a driver alternative.

sysadmin@q4os-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-sis

Take a look at this website even though it doesnt directly apply but the driver you use must be for the 771/671.

Log file ID's it as ;

[  2132.480] (II) VESA(0): VESA VBE OEM Product: 6330

I didn't have much luck with that either wink

Re: SiS 771/671 on Dell optiplex FX160 / Q4OS - FIXED

I can see "xserver-xorg-video-sisusb - X.Org X server -- SiS USB display driver" in the repo's but looks like it relates to usb?
I can't see anything wrong with your xorg.conf although mine does look slightly different, I'll paste mine here (not for a hi res screen though) in case it holds any clues for you.

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Boardname	"NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated (generic)"
	Busid "PCI:1:0:0"

EndSection

Section "Monitor"

	EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier	"Default Layout"
  screen 0 "Default Screen" 0 0

As you can see I have an extra section at the end, but I don't know what difference that will make. Could be worth a try though?

One guy claims the 0.10.8 new driver from Xorg works.

This worked smile

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? … 34#p601888

I have to admit that several hours ago I read that and thought... nah, I shouldn't have to go through all _that_!!!

Anyway, as this SIS chipset is quite old and less common these days one hopes no one else will have to go through
this too lol!

Another bazookie whacky night on Q4OS!
