Several Questions

I am new today. I have used Linux for many years but consider myself a beginner. I installed the FreeXP desktop image. I have a 2 year old HP laptop with 4gb and 128gb storage. When trying to install, I wanted it to go on a secondary flash and not on my HDD. I had it lock up about 75% 2 different times. I also found it wrote a partial grub menu to my HDD and I was not able to recover.  I finally had to restart and do a fresh install and allow it to overwrite Windows. This was not what I wanted to do, but now I will live with it. Questions:
1..Is installation to a secondary flash permitted?
2..Can I stop writing anything from Grub to the HDD?
3..How can I find instructions to install Grub Customizer? Add a PPA?
4..Chromium stops responding so I have to reboot. Any thoughts on what I can do?
5..FreeXP/Free10 seem unfinished. Can I install plain Q4OS and then apply one of these themes?

Thank you.
