While I've got Thunderbird working for email, all too often it starts chewing up the CPU, so I'd like to at least TRY KMail. I can't seem to get it working.
I'm using an AOL account (yes, I'm old! ). I've generated an AOL mail password for KMail.
I've tried setting up inbound using:
* My AOL email address
* The generated password
* host: imap.aol.com
* imap port 993
* Security -- TLS
* Authentication -- LOGIN (very unsure about this setting)
And outbound:
* My AOL email address
* The generated password
* host: smtp.aol.com
* smtp port 587
* Security -- TLS (have seen STARTTLS recommended, but just "TLS" is all KMail allows)
* Authentication -- LOGIN (if I check the "Check what server supports" it only leaves LOGIN and PLAIN visible)
So far, this SHOULD work, but it doesn't. Any ideas?

You could try port 465 for smtp and see if that helps. Ive had nothing but issues with Kmail and just stopped using it.

It appears to be the IMAP setup that is amiss. I actually managed to create and send a test email. But thanks!

Glad you got it worked out, but did you determine what the issue was?

Nope. That one email seems to have been a one-off. Couldn't get it working either. Wound up installing Evolution, which turns out to be pretty good. Easy enough to set up, better app layout than either KMail or Geary (I tried that, too, and while it worked, its layout and functions was sucky), and is lighter than both AND T-bird. I'd tried it long ago and had dismissed it for some reason. It's pretty good.
I also just removed kmail-trinity. So guess this post can be SOLVED.

I would have recommended Evolution but wasnt sure it was light enough for your needs. Used Evolution for quite some time till I switched back To Thunderbird.
Never liked Geary even though its one of the most used email apps in lightweight distros.
