Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

I'm into finding out just what my system does and doesn't need and getting rid of the stuff that it and I don't need.

I try to use lighter-weight apps when I can. I use lxterminal instead of konsole, for example. I have two lxterminal sessions up, and according to ps_mem, they take up 23.6 MB of RAM. At the same time, I have ONE konsole terminal up, and it alone is taking up 44.7 MB.

So looking at the ps_mem output, I start wondering about certain items. One that caught my attention was "baloorunner", which uses about 25 MB RAM. First, I'm not even sure of what its benefit to me is, but second, it *appears* to be dead weight anyway -- balooctl status says Baloo is currently disabled! So why is it there taking up RAM in the first place?

Same thing for Dolphin, which is an okay file manager, but it's showing up taking up ~57 MB, and I'm not really even using it! What's it doing??? (Oh -- so maybe it's there because it's pinned to the system tray/panel? Maybe I can replace it with an ultra-light one I use -- Xfe. Yes?)

So how do I get rid of baloorunner for good, and are there any other less-than-useful items that can be trimmed?

I'm really liking Q4OS (my previous distro experiences have mostly been MX), I just want to make it consume fewer resources.

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Im just curious, how much ram do you have in your system and what are your hardware system specs?  Trying to run lean is admirable but most systems today have 8gb or more of ram and are running pretty decent cpus.  I just picked up a Dell Latitude e5450 laptop for $40 with 16gb ofd ram, i5 2.5ghz cpu and a 256gb ssd. The system is close to 10 years old and can run pretty much anything. I run the KDE version of Q4OS really well.

Sure, but which are the most needed for this issue? BTW, I'm coming from an MX Linux background, where we are expected to use and provide a "Quick System Info" view of both hardware and software, maybe similar to the inxi command shown, but they provide a wrapper "app" that puts it all into an HTML code block in your clipboard, which you then paste into the forum, where it shows up in a scrollable box. Might be a useful thing to borrow, no?

- Installation media image file, or a method, you have used for system installation.

MX Linux - create "Live USB" installer with iso file (it's only "live for MX" isos, though)

- Desktop environment (Plasma, Trinity, ... other).

Right now, KDE Plasma Wayland

- Desktop software profile applied, using the Desktop profiler tool (Full, Basic, Pure, Custom).

Full

- A brief description and steps to reproduce the issue.

Ummmm.... run sudo ps_mem ???

- Screenshots, if possible.

Not a screen shot, but output of ps_mem, if you want (down below).

And yes, @crosscourt, I have a decent system with 8 GB RAM. But should I be trying to fill it all up? ;-)

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

The point is not to limit your use of apps because of resource issues. You can also upgrade ram but 8gb is plenty for most uses and certainly wont get filled up by the majority of Linux distros out there. Older systems limited to 2-4gb of ram I can see why they work so hard to keep their system lean. Given your information youre doing just fine with memory usage.

I also use to be a long term moderator in both the Mepis and MX Linux forums starting in the MX16 days, so Im very familiar with their forum requirements.
Im presently running MX as well as Q4OS with KDE.

Also the MX forums are far larger and its necessary to use different methods to gain info from users given the volume of posts. For now the Q4OS forums are a bit more intimate and its easier to directly interact with the members and devs more freely.

Im still curious what hardware youre running? smile

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

I didn't post the hardware stuff 'cause it wasn't a hardware issue. This is an old Samsung RF711 laptop, 17" display, the chipset is sorta good, but can't be under or over volted, the fan speed can't be software adjusted, and the damn Nvidia card has to be turned off, or the machine will be prone to overheating. (I had to tweak the live usb installation environment to do that as well just to get Q4OS installed, 'cause I kept getting kernel thermal shutdowns. So I pay LOTS of attention to whatever I can do to not stress the poor thing.) The 8 GB RAM is the max it can take. As for the hardware info, here goes:

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Your system is very capable and can use up to 16gb of ram(according to a number of users reporting with the same system regardless of what Samsung says about 8gb) so you should be fine. i7 cpu is good and a system from 2011 can run pretty much any Linux distro or set of apps. Nvidia igpus of that era were a pain both with heat and power usage.
Thanks for posting your specs as it does help in knowing how your system will react to various distros but certainly you dont need to worry too much about memory usage with apps. Power management is going to be the bigger issue.

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Yes, power management is a big concern. I installed tlp and tlp-ui and thermald and maybe xfce4-power-manager*, which has good capabilities and is actually surprisingly light, but I still haven't figured out how to verify that tlp is active (if it even needs to be "active") and doing anything. At least thermald seems to be in the system. At least it doesn't take up much room.

*no, apparently not. Looking at KDE Power Management stuff now -- looks like I already went there and tweaked.

Point me to how I can add another 8GB RAM on this box. I'd love to know how, not that I want to do anything that needs more than pulling and plugging memory cards! No opening the laptop other than the convenience openings for SSDs and RAM. No soldering!

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Youre Samsung RF711 should have two memory slots allowing for two 8gb sticks to be installed as long as you have the latest bios. I saw this looking at the info for your laptop specs online from reputable sources. All you need to do is remove the sticks by pulling the springs on either side and slide them out of the slots.

Its also dependent on the revision of the system as S04 can use 16gb and S01 cant. Its certainly worth a try though.

Well, I'd want more assurances before I go out and buy the memory cards. Yes, I put in the second 4 GB card, so I know how easy that was. I'll see if I can dig up the specs.

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

As I said it depends on the revision of the system, S04 or later does support it. I have Dell laptops that claim to only be able to use 8gb of ram and are happily running 16gb. So much depends on the motherboard revision and bios. Hope it works out.

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

@crosscourt, I flipped over my laptop to find the model number (serial number was available via sudo inxi, but not model #). My laptop is NP-RF711-S02US. Is NOT upgradable above 8 GB RAM. Still worth checking, as I cleaned out under the laptop. smile Lots of dust, so maybe it will run a little cooler!

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Okay, still no answer to the original questions. (1) How to get rid of baloorunner (unless you can convince me it's needed)? (2) Any other stuff that can be removed without harm?

I don't care what you say about not needing to worry about lightness. We didn't get to the moon by leaving dead weight in the system. :-)

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Yep, the S02 revision of your laptop cant use 16gb of ram but it was worth a try, as it would have been nice to be S04 or later.

As to the lightness of your system thats your choice but we just wanted to point out, that memory usage is dynamic and changes minute to minute, even when your system is just sitting at idle. With 8gb of ram youll have no issues.
About baloorunner, its the file indexing and extractor for KDE Plasma and cant be removed but I believe it can be turned off. Sorry to say Im not sure how and honestly thats youre decision to make, as Im not going to recommend removing something of this nature, which might lead to system issues.

Ultimately youll need to do some research and decide how you want to proceed with your system.

You can turn it off:
$ balooctl suspend
$ balooctl disable
Or:
System Settings > Search (or Index).

We don't think you can remove it however, as baloo is a required dependency of Plasma.

Re: Search and destroy mission to trim unnecessary fat in the system

Thanks, @q4osteam! Apparently, I might have disabled it earlier somehow, but it had still been showing up as running. Today, it's not there, so a win.

One that does show up but not sure what it's good for is the flatpak-portal. Why does that have to be running always? Yeah, it's not much, you say. But why???
