Smallest Q4OS

Hiyall,
Second newbie issue.
I am not without some experience having been in the Linux space for 6 years.
I intend using this laptop for playing music ONLY. It will be in the music room. My only use for internet will be updates/upgrades. I will use pdf viewer, text and VLC and nothing else. I understand that the preferred profile would be "Full" and then delete all the programs (thereby keeping the background software) or is it safe for me to use "Basic" or better still, "Minimal"?

Re: Smallest Q4OS

Personally I think its easier/safer to install the Full desktop profile, then trim it down for most users.  Youll have less issues and the system should function at first boot with reliability.

Re: Smallest Q4OS

Whenever I install Q4OS I always use the 'Live' option which simply installs the exact same system as you get when booting the ISO version.
To this I then add Multimedia Codecs.
All you would then need is VLC and kpdf-trinity or any of of the load of pdf viewers that are out there.
I always install Bleachbit - then run Bleachbit (Root) to clean out all the hundreds of foreign language man files and other stuff - Localisations.
That saves around 500mb and thousands and thousands of files that will never need updating.

If you install a full system and then start deleting stuff you just wind up where you started and introduce finger error problems. Why bother?

Re: Smallest Q4OS

We would recommend you to install the Basic profile. Avoid using Minimal unless you are really experienced with Linux and Q4OS.

Re: Smallest Q4OS

Q4OS Team,
Thank you. Basic was my thought as well.
What background files (if any) would you recommend that I re-install?

CONFUSED
It seems that when I changed to Basic that it installed 5.5 Aquarius as well. Is this correct? I am using 32bit 4.13.

No, Desktop profiler doesn't upgrade to a new edition. Run in terminal to check your system:
$ get-q4os-version

Why do you think it installed 5.5 Aquarius as well ?

Re: Smallest Q4OS

Depends on how much stuff you want to remove. Its a tradeoff as an experienced user may find a minimal/basic install preferable, as they have experience to fall back on, if there is an issue and know what is needed. Intermediate or beginner may not have that advantage and find their system is lacking something or it doesnt work at all. We've seen this a lot on these forums, so depending on your experience level the full desktop profile might be the safer bet, with some adjustments.
I have a system similar to his Atom system and it runs pretty much the same with basic or full desktop profile, but I have 4gb of ram.

@fjd1fjd
You can also save your own custom profile, edit it for your needs and apply it to any Q4OS system anytime, even on fresh new installation using Calamares installer. See custom profiles https://www.q4os.org/dqa016.html
