I've installed:
q4os-5.5-i386-instcd.r1.iso
on an old machine, Intel Atom N270 with 1GB memory (an LG X130 mini-laptop). Things seem fine, but if I try to launch LibreOffice (7.4.7) I get the messages below, and it crashes. Why? And - what can I do about it?

Try to install OpenOffice, what libreoffice is based off, and see what happens. I've set up a similar environment to yours in QEMU and I'm not seeing the same error.

OpenOffice has been dead for well over a decade now, I don't think it makes sense to try that.
I did, however, have a little progress understanding what's going on - by filing a bug with LibreOffice. I can't post a link; but the bug number is 163468 and you can find their bug tracker pretty easily.
apparently, the problem is not with Java (we can make that go away by installing additional LO-related packages); there's some unrelated exception that's crashing the app.

From what I could find, the LG XA130 screen has a resolution of 1024x600 and hardware requirements for LibreOffice is "X Server with 1280x800 resolution, with at least 256 colors".
Maybe it is the cause of the problem.
Note that OpenOffice is still under development.
OpenOffice recommends to uninstall LibreOffice first.

I'll ask that question on the bug page, but I am doubtful, because the resolution requirements are basically a "we'll let ourselves create dialogs of this size" kind of a thing.
> Note that OpenOffice is still under development.
No, it isn't. If you'll look at the commit log:
https://github.com/apache/openoffice/commits/trunk/
you will see commits which are mostly whitespace and formatting changes; icon and label tweaks; and once every few months some actual change (e.g. switching extension testing code to JUnit). But the projecty is dead. Essentially all the developers switched to LibreOffice many years ago. You can compare this with the LibreOffice commit log:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/
and see 100x more commits, almost all of them consequential, cross-references to issues on bugs.documentfoundation.org, large(ish) number of commiters etc.

Apache OpenOffice on their website still lists the 4.1.16 release as coming and also shows the 4.2 version TBD. Regardless of how viable some may see this project, they are still developing and if you look around a bit at job listings, they are still looking to recruit qualified help. I believe they also have a mobile version AndrOffice, thats still being developed and is being offered on Google Play.

crosscourt: No, the project is not in development. The last major release was 11 years ago. The last minor release (4.1) was 10 years ago. If you look at the point releases, made every ~10 months or so, you'll see something like 14 tweaks, e.g.:
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?l … one=4.1.15
for a project which had amassed ~120,000 bug reports.
> Apache OpenOffice on their website ... also shows the 4.2 version TBD.
Check out the link to the 4.2.0 TBD page: The text there was authored in Sep 2016 - when they acknowledged they have only fixed bugs, but promised to post more about an upcoming featureful release.
> if you look around a bit at job listings, they are still looking to recruit qualified help
I rather doubt that; although if Apache somehow decides to do so - at least there will be someone to talk to :-)

Release date for 4.1.15 was 12/22/2023 and there are 17 releases between that date and 2013.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Product_Release
Irregardless of tweaks and overall low interest, it remains that AOO is still being supported and developed regardless of its low popularity or overall usage.
Post 4 above is correct that Apache in April of 2024 states they are still actively developing and what they changed/what will be coming.
For what its worth.................
