FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

...Falkon works fine with any/all web sites, with no problems.   Google Gmail, Voice, and other apps all OK.
Ebay was OK last week, when I purchased something  ;>(
This week I tried Ebay.com and got------

ebay(logo)______________________________________________________________________

Pardon Our Interruption....

As you were browsing eBay, something about your browser made us think you were a bot.
There are a few reasons this might happen:

.  You're are a power user moving through this website with super-human speed.
.  You've disabled JavaScript in your browser.
.  A third-party browser plugin, such as Ghostery or NoScript, is preventing JavaScript from running.
_________________________________________________________________________________

I'm at a total loss.   ( I am however, a super-human ! )
Maybe JavaScript ???  ( All other sites work perfectly )
3rd Party browser plugin ???  ( beats me !)
This happens when Falkon goes to ebay.com.   No matter how, I type ebay.com, or a menu click, or web-search for ebay.
same Pardon Our Interruption....

The Falkon browser-window must be closed (all other browser-windows continue to function as normal )

All help is certainly appreciated !

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

Someone reports:    This problem was discovered & corrected in Falkon, early this year, beginning release 24...
However Q4OS Discover & Synaptic both show version=23...

Why hasn't this been updated ? !

I have since loaded Google's browser and  the eBay logon-problem ceased.
I can only add If you are using FALKON, DO NOT logon to any site that "offers" to use your everyday ID(s) & passwords.

Who reported this ?  An un-identified eBay user !   (  of course, you must logon to ebay, to find it !!!  )

This issue looks to be a Debian upstream one, so you could also report it for Debian developers.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

What the ???     "Debian upstream one"    ???  I have no inkling what that means.

I'm runnng Q4OS.    FALKON came via DISCOVER.     FALKON says whoever maintains DISCOVER needs help.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

Q4OS Team doesn't maintain Falkon... All they were saying to you it's that this problem has to be handled by debian developpers (and so reported to them), they can't do much about it.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

I don't care who maintains FALKON !     That has zero value in this topic.

As previously stated:  .....problem was discovered & corrected in Falkon, early this year, beginning release 24...
However Q4OS Discover & Synaptic both show version=23...,,,Why hasn't this been updated ? !
---------------------------------
If you need to know why DISCOVER's  Falkon is version #23,  sorry,  it ain't my fault !
If you insist, then YOU need someone (debian ?) to update DISCOVER's link to Falkon 24  !   Good luck with that.
Or - maybe test your luck... try using FALKON.23 and your most popular-logon (mine is Gmail) to access Ebay.
Your address, your PayPal, your credit cards, purchase history, all there for the hacker.    Hacker-food !

For now - I'll use my slow-dog-laptop (Peppermint/Debian/Chromium) for Ebay !

Too bad.

Q4OS Team always does its best to help users whenever possible. Here, obviously, Q4OS Team has no way to change anything and has suggested the procedure you could have followed to hope that it will be resolved.

Remember that you are in the world of free and open source software that is the result of the voluntary work of a multitude of people. A message like the one here-above is not a thank you for all this work.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

Thays all very touching, thank you.

However.,,, how does that apply to my problem, what's that have to do with some hacker stealing my info from eBay ?
The hacker attacked an "extension" used in FALKON, which thieved my info, like a rat that he is,
and then, to add insult to injury, he infests code to produce the ridiculous "You must be a superman to  go that fast".
What kind of insanity is that ?

Back to your view. The poor little orphans, Q4OS, KDE, Ebay, Falkon, Debian?, et al,  exactly what do you think is their role in this insanity ?
So far, nothing. If you intall Q4OS and Falkon today, you will get a 2023 version of Falkon via the KDE 'frameworks' (whoever that is) !
One moment:  I just got a Discover program notice of "7 Python updates".    Good to see Python is on-the-ball !

BTW: I would send $$$ to all involved,  but my PayPay logon has been 'infested' with the same hack !
Funny -  the Debian laptop has no problems.
Tell me who the hacker is, and I'll give him/her/them a gift   ; > )

Q4OS devs do not create the code for Falkon, they provide an OS that you can use and as such provide any fixes for their own software that they find! You choose the extra software to install.

Python latest version = 3.12.5
Debian latest version = 3.11.2-1+b1

Is that considered being on the ball? only a little behind the curve?

If you have been hacked you better check you still have those $$$'s that you are promising here.

Perhaps using the older version that is currently available from Debian Stable is the best choice.

Are you assuming/implying that somebody here knows who this "hacker" is???

With all that said, maybe you should contact the devs to see if they can refund the full cost of your OS. If you think Q4OS devs are to blame for this I would suggest that you might be happier if you return to M$ Windows and their "Oh so secure" system.

@tshafer
We understand the issue you reported affects Q4OS, so it is Q4OS one too, no disagreement. The most easy way to seek a possible redress and discuss circumstances would be to report it for Debian devs as stated above. Unfortunately, we are not able to fix the issue directly, we can only report this at upstream.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

Obviously, I don't understand how DEBIAN is involved, which makes 'reporting' my eBay logon problem to Debian would be asinine.
To me, the problem with FALKON (if it is Falkon's problem) was corrected back in Januaury, while, Q4OS did nothing to update the DISCOVER application which all users trust to keep their system safe.   Run Discover on your system. Look in 'INTERNET' 'FALKON' display the release info.

If you find that is "OK" and acceptable to your user base,,, then fine, you can 'report it upstream'  (wherever that is ???).
ELSE, you must disable Falkon, or at the least, notify the users that there may be a security risk in running Falkon.

To senior users:  Back in  Intel-DOS/WINDOWS days, we had security-monitor-software which would scare-the-cat whenever anything appeared or seemed  threatening.

Things like -  ebay(logo)_______Pardon Our Interruption....

There are a few reasons this might happen:  etc...etc...etc...

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

Install Flathub then you can install the Flatpak version which is 24.xx.x

It may well take up a lot of space.

It's not because you don't understand why an advice makes sense that it is asinine.

You need to know that Q4OS distributions are derivatives of Debian distributions:
- Q4OS 4.x (Gemini) is based on Debian 11 (Bullseye),
- Q4OS 5.x (Aquarius) is based on Debian 12 (Bookworm).
It mean that a Q4OS distro is fundamentally the corresponding Debian distro, but with a set of customisations (specific utilities and packages, desktop environments,...). Except for those customisations, all software packages are those of the corresponding Debian distribution.

Debian 11 and 12 are considered as stable versions. The packages belonging to each distro reside in their specific repository. With the time, a more recent version of a distro owns more recent versions of the packages. But generally, more recent packages are never back-ported neither to older repositories nor even (at least in the case of Debian, it's its policy) to the latest stable version.

Debian also maintains two further versions, a testing one (currently Trixie) and an unstable one (always Sid), with more recent versions of packages. The testing one will become the next stable version once all packages will be considered trustful enough as to be released as a new stable (and trustful enough) version.

For example, in the case of Falkon:
- Debian 11 Bullseye => Q4OS 4 Gemini: Falkon 3.10.x
- Debian 12 Bookworm => Q4OS 5 Aquarius: Falkon 22.12.x
- Debian Trixie (no Q4OS version yet): Falkon 24.08.x
- Debian Sid (no Q4OS version yet): Falkon 24.08.x
As explained above, Debian maintainers will not back-port Falkon 22.12.x from Bookworm to Bullseye, and will not back-port Falkon 24.08.x from Trixie to Bookworm.
And, since Q4OS repositories are the corresponding Debian one's, Q4OS 5 will never have Falkon 24.08.x available.

I never used Plasma Discover and I can't say much about it. It is also a package, so it is specific to a distro. I may be wrong, but I guess (can someone correct or confirm please?) that basically it uses the installed distro's repositories (and maybe additional ones), and so a user might get a slightly more recent versions of some packages, but not necessarily the latest one.

Tens of thousands of packages exist, most of them with tens of successive versions, developed and maintained by tens of thousands teams around the world. Q4OS Team maintains only the part that makes Q4OS different from Debian (and bring support to the users and even sometimes undergoes criticism).
Q4OS developers form a tiny team compared to Debian developers; they cannot develop a full repository and maintain it up to date; that's the reason why the former rely on the latter. In particular, Plasma Discover is developed and maintained by the KDE Community, not by Q4OS Team, is included in the Debian distribution, and is not a Q4OS customisation.
And Q4OS Team has not the power to disable anything in Debian repos.

Interesting articles about Linux distributions and Plasma Discover:
- https://userbase.kde.org/Discover

I hope you understand now why and how Debian is involved.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

Here are Falkon 24 packages built for bookworm, from mx repo, you can remove existing falkon with "sudo apt remove falkon", and install this package if you want:

64bits: https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/f/ … _amd64.deb

32bits: https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/f/ … 1_i386.deb

At last !  ...the wizards awaken !

Thank you HCHIPER ( we should give YOU a reward )   MIDAS is 100% 'spot on' as my U.K. pal would say.  The 'sticky' is a must-have !

I hope Q4OS TEAM is reading this !

Hooray !    SEB3773 provides Falkon 24. Like the mechanic says "Step aside - while I fix this"...  ( he should get the trophy! )

Off topic: This popular 'main-line' browser I'm using, should be called "blinky", it looks fast, but I seem to blink a lot, while it is busy !
I'm logging off to (Backup) & install  Falkon 24.

Thanks and again, appreciate your help.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

WRT the mx packages for Falkon, you must appreciate that you will then need to keep checking that location for any updates as otherwise you may find yourself running an out of date or possibly compromised version. It will not update automatically.

You are of course free to add the mx repo to your sources.list, but you will then find that other packages from the mx repo will also be updated. This can lead to conflicts - not saying it will but can. I say this from experience not just to be alarmist.

Using the flatpak version means you will avoid this.

Re: FALKON browser & Ebay Pardon Our Interruption....

The downloaded MX packages installed 'auto-magically' with DISCOVER, version 24.01.75  now installed.
Works like it should.  Log-On to eBay = no problems found.

Thanks BIN - flatpak was not needed. The download was "Discovered" (trick name ;>)   Everything seems working fine & FAST !

Discover also shows Chromium version 128 !!! update in progress.   I'll keep it as backup-browser for 2024.
