I've installed XnView MP 1.5.2 using the .deb package available on https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/#downloads. It is said to be able to open HEIC image files, but it didn't recognize this format at first. I found the solution on https://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic. … 99#p184799.
In short, if the necessary package libheif1 is already installed on your system, just execute these two commands to have XnView able to find it and able and to open HEIC files:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libheif.so.1 /usr/lib/libheif.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libheif.so.1 /usr/lib/libheif.so.1
I'm using XnView MP to replace Gwenview because the latter crashes on opening large jpeg files (created by darktable), which seems to be a long time unsolved known issue.
