Operating system fails to load after update

I was prompted to update my system this morning but struggled to log out afterwards and now cannot load my system. I get to the system log in, which is usually skipped but the process stops at this point. I did notice a message stating that the system failed to load the kernel, which clearly seems to be the issue.

Did anyone else experience the same problem after the recent update?

I assume the system has been corrupted and I will have to reinstall it or take  the opportunity to upgrade to Gemini but would welcome any advice before making the decision.
