PuTTY /dev/ttyS0 connection issue

I'm trying to use the serial port on my Dell D620 laptop with PuTTY but whenever I try to open the port, PuTTY complains "Unable to open connection to /dev/ttyS0: Unable to open serial port". inxi -F shows no tty. Do I need a driver? Thanks in advance!
