Music Downloads and MP3 Player

Is there a recommended app to download music for Linux and is there a recommended mp3 player to use?

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

7digital was recommended as a download site for music. I registered, purchased and downloaded a song. It downloaded as a zip file for some unknown reason. Was unable to open or play it with Banshee, Clementine or Rhythmbox. It did open and play on VLC. How to I open a zip file and convert it to MP3 on Q4OS?

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

If you have ark-trinity installed you should be able to simply right click the file and "Open with Ark" and then click the extract button from the top menu and select where you want to extract it to. This should leave you with the mp3 file although it might be in a folder named the same as the zip file without the zip extension, no conversion should be needed.

And if you need to convert,e.g. flac, wav, wmp, ogg etc to mp3 I highly recommend the Gnome application Sound Converter - which you should find in the repos.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

I prefer Ffmpeg for conversions, and I think there is a gui for it too, but it escapes me at the moment.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

I've always preferred Amarok (trinity) for my music player.  And for converting/ripping/encoding music, I like SoundKonverter (trinity).  You can configure SoundKonverter to use ffmpeg, or lame, or what ever backend encoder you prefer.  And, if you're using Trinity as your desktop environment, these two applications are well integrated into the environment.

Just my humble opinion.

Side note:  K3B works pretty good for ripping CDs, as well.

K3b is great and my preference over other cd ripping apps. Not to say XFburn and Brasero arent good but K3b goes the extra mile.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

As for the software to download music for Linux, AudFree Tidal Converter could be the No.1. It can download music from Tidal and then you can transfer music to Linux or MP3 players. As for the best MP3 player, no matter which one you choose, you can play Tidal music on it with the help of this tool.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

Adding my 2¢ here, I have been pretty pleased with the lightweight Pragha player (https://pragha-music-player.github.io/), which is generally available in the repos (see https://pkgs.org/search/?q=pragha).

For conversion and file manipulation, I always turn to the bottomless FFmpeg (https://ffmpeg.org/) -- if you research it long enough, it can do anything you want... wink

I use https://free-mp3-download.net/ to search and download music and clementine is my preferred player which has a built-in converter tool too.

I spent a bit of time checking out this resource and they have a pretty good library.  They have some classic Front 242 and Sisters of Mercy tracks, so they're a positive in my books!  wink  Thanks for mentioning them.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

I have been using for a few years now Amazon music. I can listen to my purchases and download them which are mp3. I have a screenshot attached. This is using chrome but it also works in Firefox if you enable DRM in the settings.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

Just wanted to point out that other than for widespread compatibility, MP3 is not a good music format anymore.

Given the choice, people should opt for something lossless (e.g., FLAC or, better yet, WavPack, because it can be both lossy and lossless); lossy Opus and M4A/AAC are now way better on a bit by bit match with MP3.

But don't take my word for it: wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Hydrogenaudio_Listening_Tests.

Re: Music Downloads and MP3 Player

Songs in FLAC formats provide the lossless quality but it also occupies a lot of memory of the storage device. MP3 is still a better choice for people to listen to songs on a portable player. For me, I still use my AudKit Tidal to MP3 converter to get TIDAL music download on my MP3 player though the quality is a bit lossy.
