I have done this in the past and thought I would have another attempt under Q4OS. Xcalc is pretty ugly out of the box but with some mods to your .Xresources can be made to look pretty cool.

Following the above edit you must run
# xrdb -load ~/.Xresources
The only thing that doesn't seem to become persistent is the rectangular buttons. They revert back to rounded after a reboot? Anyone know why?
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
