snapd

Is it save to install snapd on Debian 9? I installed Firefox two weeks ago when I was still on Ubuntu 14.04  and the snap version of Firefox completely froze my system. mouse, keyboard or reset button didn't work.

I want to try to install clementine snap version because the one on Q40S doesn't work. It cannot identify or save music cd's to my pc.

Re: snapd

Snapd works fine on Debian 9 (as well as Q4OS) in my experience.

Re: snapd

Thank you for your feedback. I tried Clementine snap version and ripped the music cd, but it didn't put it in the library like Rhythmbox did, that I used in the past. I now understand why people use Ubuntu based distribution. Everything is preconfigured to just work.

Re: snapd

Snap does NOT work fine in Q4OS - just installed it the other day to try it out. Must say, overall, I am impressed, however 1 out of 5 snaps I installed works, not even the snap store seems to come up.

Re: snapd

I would suggest you to install Timeshift from Q4OS Software Centre and make system backup using it before installing snaps. You will be able to revert all changes if something goes wrong.
You can read, how to use Timeshift here: https://github.com/teejee2008/timeshift and here https://github.com/teejee2008/timeshift/wiki
Latest Timeshift release is here: https://github.com/teejee2008/Timeshift/releases

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502   If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.

Hmmm...I don't use Ubuntu, don't quite like it. It's also preconfigured to fail, given the chance. Snaps are a waste of time, IMO. I prefer appimages; one file = one app and don't need to install/uninstall anything.

Latest Timeshift release is here: https://github.com/teejee2008/Timeshift/releases

Timeshift's available from the repos:

$ apt-cache policy timeshift
timeshift:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 19.01+ds-2+deb10u1
  version table:
     19.01+ds-2+deb10u1 500
        500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian buster/main amd64 Packages

So all you need to do is

sudo apt-get install timeshift

If you prefer a GUI approach, it is available on Q4OS software centre too. smile

Re: snapd

I don't care for snaps, but I despise appimages.  1/2 of them I've ever tried simply don't work, and those that do don't integrate into menus, and it just seems so "Windowsy" way of doing things.  Download this self-contained executable from this random spot that may or may not be actually malware and run it putting complete trust that it's what it says it is.  No thanks.

That said, snap has a lot of technical limitations that can prevent it from running, and probably won't be able to be worked around in an older distro like Debian 9.

Q4OS Trinity machine - Crelander E160.  Intel Celeron N5105, 16GB LPDDR4, 512GB m.2 SATA SSD, Intel UHD graphics, Intel 7265 Wifi 5 + BT 4.x, 16" 3072x1920 LCD.

If people download whatever appimage they find, then it's no wonder they don't work. I only use appimages with a GitHub page. Yes, some may not work but most do. I'm currently using 21 appimages, they all work fine and some do integrate with the system; LibreOffice, Gimp, Gsubs, Inkscape, Joplin, Emacs, Code-OSS...some others, I just added them via KDE's edit applications menu. And I don't find them "windowsy" because unlike the "windowsy" apps, they do have support when using the official builds. If people behave in a "windowsy" way; download whatever app they found on the web without even know where they come from, "windowsy" situations can happen.

In repos, there is Timeshift v19.01, which has a very important bug. This bug can lead to incorrectly restored snapshots. There is a workaround in v19.01, but new users may not know about it.
So I strongly suggest to use latest version from GitHub (currently v20.11.1). This bug has been (finally) fixed in this version.
