Audio skipping during playback

I would like to create some audio/visual presentations so I installed vokoscreen (http://www.kohaupt-online.de/hp/) from synaptic. I use the default media player VLC for playback, and video is fine, but audio is "skipping" and stuttering so I only get snatches of the audio. I tried checking "Skip prevention" in settings/sound, and also increasing the sound buffer to maximum, but it makes no difference.

Not sure where the problem lies or where to turn next. I was using Simple Screen Recorder (http://www.maartenbaert.be/simplescreenrecorder/) on my previous distro but there isn't a Debian package for it, although it is possible to install it.

Any suggestions appreciated!
