NVIDIA Driver

I have just installed the latest x32 bit into a desktop that has NVIDIA graphics. I successfully installed the legacy driver and rebooted but all I get now is a text screen and no way to start the desktop.  I did see the configuration notice during the driver install but how to do that then when the process had already completed?  Please can someone advise how I can now get into my system and how to configure it for this driver?

So is there a way to activate my wireless connection?

Re: NVIDIA Driver

OK so I got back in by running sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*.

Now, how do I make the proper configuration edits before, during or after installing the NVIDIA driver using qinst-ipvideo so the same thing doesn't happen again?

Re: NVIDIA Driver

I guess first thing to do is like noviclan suggested, I would add sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to be on the safe side, and then try installing drivers again, at least then you would know if it works, and if not you already know how to revert back. I haven't used nvidia drivers myself (other than default ones thankfully) but have read a lot of users with all linux distro's having issues with them.

Re: NVIDIA Driver

Is there a step-by-step for installing the NVidia driver anywhere?

Bearing in mind I have Nouveau working but I think the colours look a bit 'washed out' - I seem to remember in the past that using the nv driver improved this somewhat.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Re: NVIDIA Driver

Following $ qinst-ipvideo

> Manual configuration required to enable NVIDIA driver
> The NVIDIA driver is not yet configured; it needs to be enabled in
> xorg.conf before it can be used.

After a reboot I ended up at a terminal login where 'startx' didn't work.

In this page https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers under the configuration section it says;

"Install the nvidia-xconfig package, then run it with sudo. It will automatically generate a Xorg configuration file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf"

It did so [with a few error messages] and indeed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file did exist which did reference the nvidia driver however a startx did not get me back into tdm/trinity?

I followed the other bits of advice here to no avail so purged the nvidia stuff as above just to get me back in this room.

Where next?

Run 'qinst-ipvideo' script and put it's output here. 'qinst-ipvideo' script doesn't do any real action, it only prints recommendations. If you already have installed NVidia drivers you can attach log file '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' here to analyze.
